Many of you expressed concern over the cancelled luncheon in July with Mecum Auctions. We appreciate your feedback and were also very disappointed by the cancellation.
It’s true — this was the first time that MPG had to cancel a lunch, and we’ve always been able to accommodate walk-ups at the door. But as the old saying goes, times they are a’changin’ … It’s getting more difficult for us to host events blindly and not know what kind of crowd to expect. Not only do we need to know a headcount for our venue and catering needs, we also want to make sure that we aren’t putting ourselves – and our sponsors – in the red. In the case of last month’s auction, Mecum Auctions was looking at transportation fees for two vehicles from the Midwest to the Long Beach Marriott, as well as airfare for the speaker. MPG was also looking at a price of over $2K for venue fees and catering. With fewer than 10 registered MPG members just a week away from the event, we felt it necessary (and fair) to cancel with Mecum.
After much discussion, the Board has deemed it necessary to implement a few new practices when it comes to attendance for our luncheons. Please keep in mind that these new guidelines are set in place to help our organization.
PRE-REGISTRATION IS HIGHLY ENCOURAGED
As is the case with many events – automotive or otherwise – a headcount is very important for various reasons. It’s rare to see any event these days promoted without a deadline on ticket sales. Your pre-registration does several things – it ensures interest in the topic, income to cover event costs and peace of mind and convenience when it comes to giving our sponsors and venue a ballpark attendance number.
PRE-SALE TICKETS WILL BE SOLD AT A LOWER PRICE THAN AT THE DOOR SALES.
As an incentive to help us secure our audience and plan accordingly, members who pre-register will pay a lower price for their ticket to the event. Typically, at-the-door sales will be $5 more than the pre-sale price.
We look forward to seeing you at the next event and encourage you to preregister. Thank you!
