MPG Presents “Media in the News” Featuring Angus MacKenzie of TEN

auglunchAugust 12, 2014 — Last month’s MPG luncheon, held at the Art Center College of Design’s Faculty dining hall, enjoyed a full-house of media professionals for the inaugural “Media in the News” event, featuring Angus MacKenzie, Chief Content Officer of TEN (The Enthusiast Network). The one-hour interview, moderated by Eric Noble, analyst/owner of The CarLab and Art Center faculty member, spanned everything from personal details on MacKenzie’s career to the important role video is playing today in automotive content featured online.

MacKenzie shared how TEN has consolidated content and has streamlined to eight major networks: Motor Trend Network, Hot Rod Network, Truck Trend Network, Four Wheeler Network, Mustang 360 Network, Super Chevy Network, Super Street Network and Lowrider Network. By simplifying the lineup with these new “super sites” (as dubbed by MacKenzie), they’re able to bring in more traffic than the cumulative amount of all the smaller websites they acquired. He also shared that the Motor Trend YouTube channel has over 2.5 million subscribers, which further supports the relevance of video content in our industry.

MacKenzie was quite candid throughout the interview. When the question was asked what the future might look like for an automotive journalist, MacKenzie says, “The future is … challenging. But, what I keep coming back to is — people still want the stories.”

MacKenzie also says that despite the constant rise in online content, there’s still a place for print. He likens it to the music industry and resurgence of vinyl. In today’s age of streaming music channels (and even the outdated CD), many serious music aficionados turn to vinyl for what MacKenzie calls “the premium platform.” MacKenzie envisions print reaching “premium platform” status in the future as well. How will that happen? MacKenzie’s not sure, but he does say, “The reality is, there’s a whole generation of people growing up who will never, ever, read a magazine unless they can be convinced that it’s truly a special experience.”

If you missed the event, the complete 56-minute interview is available on our YouTube channel here, produced by Right Track Motoring.

2015nissanmuranoThe delicious luncheon was sponsored by Nissan, who also offered members a sneak peek at the all-new, third generation 2015 Nissan Murano, not slated to be released until later this year. Members were also able to tour the Art Center College of Design campus and get a look at the work of some of the country’s most talented, up-and-coming automobile designers.

A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

Greetings,

September heralds a change of season, everywhere but in Southern California, where the weather is just beginning to heat up. And as we find ourselves one month away from the MPG Track Days event, we are hotly pursuing the latest cars, speakers, great food and lots of other surprises for the upcoming two-day driving and educational event. We’re trying new things this year and, based on the response we’ve gotten so far, excitement is evidenced by all the registrations we’re receiving.

Later this month, Acura is bringing the new TLX to MPG and l look forward to getting an inside look at the exclusive American Honda Museum in Torrance. Where else can you experience the thrill of seeing a 1975 Honda Civic in mint condition or 1986 Acura Legend, the first V6 offering Honda or its luxury sibling ever offered?

After Track Days passes us by, Mazda is going to throw a mixer in the basement of their R&D building on Thursday, October 30th to celebrate another historic event – the announcement of the 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata – along with a sneak peek of a Mazda SEMA show car. More details are coming soon.

Let’s face it, there’s so much to be excited about this year at the Motor Press Guild and I’m proud and honored to be a part of it. I hope you are too. Our organization would not exist without everyone who participates from the automotive media space and we are looking forward to yet another season in the life of our organization.

So get in your car of choice and drive out to one of our amazing year-end events! I look forward to seeing you soon.

All the Best,

— Joni Gray
