September 16, 2014 — Acura hosted the MPG September luncheon at the Honda Collection Museum in Torrance, featuring its all-new 2015 Acura TLX. The event created such a rush of MPG members that extra tables, chairs and plates had to be brought in to accommodate the crowd. Historic mass-market Honda and Acura models along with race cars, motorcycles, engines and transmissions, were beautifully displayed at the private museum and members enjoyed the access and camaraderie of their peers at the event.

MPG members were given an exclusive look at the all-new Acura TLX and a presentation on the state of the brand, delivered by Acura Division’s Senior Vice President and General Manager, Michael Accavitti.

Accavitti focused on how the the launch of the TLX represented a new era for Acura and said, “In many respects, this is the most important launch in the history of our company.”

In addition to addressing most models in Acura’s lineup and fielding a Q&A session with the audience, Accavitti stated, “We grow more confident everyday that this new TLX is going to be every bit of the high-volume player and strong competitor that we believe it can be.”

Mazda ’80s “MX-er”
Thursday October 30, 2014 5:30-8:00pm

We’re bringing back the MPG Networking Mixer which is always a fun evening event for MPG members. This time, Mazda will graciously host us at its R&D Building in Irvine.

The all-new 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata will be on display and a brief design walk-around with Mazda Director of Design, Derek Jenkins is planned for the evening. For a little added fun since it’s the night before Halloween, a DJ will spin tunes from the ’80s era, and Mazda invites guests to wear their favorite ’80s fashions or a treasured ’80s band t-shirt. (Normal 2014-era clothing is also acceptable.)

As in the case of all our MPG Mixers, there will be plenty of time for networking, you can bring a friend, food and happy hour libations are complementary (thanks to Mazda), and we will extend our guest list to past MPG members to lure them back into the fold.

So come on down, party hardy and schmooze to the max with Mazda and MPG!

A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

Dear MPG Members,

October has finally come and MPG Track Days are just a week away. The registrations are still coming in and the team is ready for a great event. We hope that everyone involved enjoys the new format and comes away with a great experience, fodder for many stories, and just some time to reconnect with our Southern California OEM representatives, journalists, press car service companies and industry associates.

But this October, there are three other opportunities to pencil in and you won’t want to miss any of them.

The MPG Mixer on Thursday night, October 30th is a rare opportunity to party like it’s 1989 at the Mazda Research and Development building in Irvine where we can walk the hallowed halls where the Mazda Miata was first conceived. An historic display of the Mazda (MX-5) Miata will be on hand and you can bring a guest of your choice to check it out. The “Mazda 1980s MX-er” will be costume optional, but if you wanted to get your favorite 80’s band concert t-shirt out of moth balls, or put together an 80’s themed wardrobe, please do! We are so grateful to Mazda for hosting this great networking event and we know it will be another memorable one.

We received another opportunity to open an invitation to our members from Ford and also wanted to pass it along. Ford has opened up their Irvine Design Studio doors to us on October 29th to us to attend a lunch and traveling road show all about the 2015 Ford Edge – a complete redesign for this segment-leading model.

But, before either of these events, we are also invited to attend the AutoDesignO design panel, being held at the famous Warner Brothers Studios in Hollywood on Tuesday, October 21. As always, Eric Noble will conduct an excellent panel of car designers from BMW, GM, Hyundai and Mazda and his panels are always lively, interesting and entertaining. Journalists, students, fellow designers and others will attend this grand event to hear about “Cars of Character.”

Please try to attend all of these great opportunities for learning, reporting, networking or just having fun. I think this month’s roster demonstrates that being an MPG member is exciting again. I personally appreciate all the kind emails and comments I hear from so many of you. Enjoy October and I look forward to seeing you very soon.

All the Best,

— Joni Gray
