MPG meets Mirai at April luncheon

April 14, 2015 —  MPG members were treated to an exclusive presentation on the go-to-market strategy of Toyota’s all-new fuel cell vehicle, the Mirai. Held at The Proud Bird in April, Mark Oldenburg, National Fleet Marketing, Mobility and Strategic Planning Manager for Toyota Motor Sales USA, spoke on how the brand promises more changes in the auto industry in next 5-10 years than in past 50.  The information presented to our members included the development of Mirai’s logo and tagline, Toyota’s plans for growing the fuel cell infrastructure, sales volume expectations for the car, and the company’s ultimate goals for Mirai and hydrogen fuel cell technology. He also shared what Toyota believes is the biggest challenge facing the success of the Mirai and other fuel cell vehicles — which is educating consumers on the benefits of hydrogen.

Following Oldenberg’s presentation, Matt McClory, Manager of Toyota’s Fuel Cell vehicle group, led members outside for a detailed walk-around, discussing the Mirai’s design and engineering. MPG members got to look under the hood, inside the trunk and photograph the vehicle from every angle. Unfortunately, the Mirai was not ready for test drives just yet.
29webIn addition to Toyota’s presentation, Jun Terashima addressed MPG to extend a special invitation to the 44th Tokyo Motor Show (view the brochure here). Terashima encouraged all members to attend this year and offered his assistance to any member wishing to attend needing help with travel plans and information.

MEDIA GUIDE COVER CONTEST WINNER

Media-Guide-cover2015Congratulations to Bruce Benedict,
Winner of the 2015/2016 Media Guide
Photo Cover Contest

This year’s winner of the MPG Media Guide cover contest is noted photographer and SoCal resident Bruce Benedict, who used a Canon 5D Mark III, set at ISO 100,  ¼-sec., f4, capturing the vehicle at 24mm (24-70mm Canon f/4L IS USM).  The camera was tripod-mounted on a bridge overlooking the Kia/Hyundai test track north of LA.

This was the last shot of what Bruce called “a very good day,” netting a seductive shot of the Kia concept vehicle, the Stinger GT4, which ultimately produced a fine cover image for this year’s guide.  Our thanks to him for his submission.

Bruce’s website is www.brucebenedictphoto.com.

A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

boardmember-JasonFogelson

May is turning out to be a very busy month for the Motor Press Guild.

One of our signature events, Droptops & Dirt, is gearing up for its third year at Calamigos Ranch in Malibu on May 27. If you’ve never attended this event before, you’re missing out on a great day of off-roading on challenging trails, driving in open roadsters on the twisty roads of Malibu, and a great lunch from the folks at Calamigos. It’s so much fun, it’s a shame to call it work – but you’ll have the chance to test vehicles back-to-back-to-back in some very excellent conditions, and there will be experts on hand to help you learn more about the cars, trucks and off-roaders you’re driving. Bring your pen, bring a notebook and bring some sunscreen. Use the hashtag #MPGDnD when you tell all of your friends and colleagues about the event.

Thanks to our friends from Rolls-Royce for extending an invitation to MPG members to attend the Inside Rolls-Royce exhibition at the SLS Hotel on Saturday, May 9. We’re glad to have the chance to pass along such great opportunities.

We’re expecting to make an announcement about another May event for our members in the next couple of days. Watch your email and our website for more information.

It was great to see the big turnout for our April luncheon at the Proud Bird. Mark Oldenburg and Matt McClory from Toyota made a very impressive presentation about the Mirai Hydrogen Fuel Cell Vehicle program, and even brought out a Mirai for a walkaround – though not a driving opportunity yet. We had to add tables to accommodate the crowd, which is always a great feeling.

We’ve got some great stuff in the works for June, July and August already. It’s hard to believe how quickly this year is flying by.

Before I close, I want to repeat my call to action from last month.

In an effort to raise MPG’s visibility, I’d like to ask each member who uses a signature in their email correspondence to add a line that says “Member, Motor Press Guild” with a clickable link to https://www.motorpressguild.org. If you’re feeling really proud of your status as a member, you can even download this clickable MPG logo and add it to your automatic signature:

mpg-sigRight-click the logo to save to your computer (How to “right click” if working on a Mac) If you need help on adding an image to your email signature, click here for a helpful article if you use a PC. (Substitute the MPG logo for the social media icon when mentioned and use www.motorpressguild.org for the link.) Click here if you need help with Apple Mail on a Mac.

If we all do this, we’ll be raising awareness of MPG in a subtle fashion – which will be good for the organization, and good for each member in return.

That’s it for this month. Drive safely, and I’ll see you at Calamigos.

Best,
— Jason Fogelson
