to Speak at October 3 Meeting
|
|
 |
Fred Senn, author and founding partner of Fallon Worldwide, will be the featured speaker at the Motor Press Guild (MPG) luncheon Tuesday, October 3. Drawing on a decade of advertising and branding experience with German automaker BMW, Senn's presentation will cover why car advertising doesn't work in America and what to do about it.
Senn will explore the realities of the largest, and arguably the least effective, advertising category in the country. He'll also focus on questions like, is automotive advertising at a tipping point, and will it change radically, for the better, in the next five years? According to Senn, there will be winners and losers among the car companies and the media that serve them.
Senn recently teamed with his partner, Pat Fallon, to co-write "Juicing the Orange: How to Turn Creativity into a Power Business Advantage." The book, published by Harvard Business School Press in July, was written in commemoration of Fallon Worldwide's 25th anniversary.
Over the past 25 years, Senn has earned his stripes in the automotive advertising category; first with five years developing campaigns for Porsche, then a full decade working for BMW. In addition to his advertising career, Senn is also an experienced driving instructor for Porsche, Audi and BMW clubs in Minnesota. He has raced a 911 in Porsche club competition throughout the last 10 years.

Pipas to Discuss Challenges
Facing the Current SUV Market
at Next MPG Meeting
At September's Motor Press Guild luncheon, George Pipas, Ford Motor Company's well-known manager of U.S. sales analysis and reporting, will be the organization's featured speaker. His presentation will focus on one of Ford's most important vehicle segments, the SUV market. He'll take a brief look at the history of the SUV market, the evolution of that group and his predictions for the segment through the end of the decade. In addition, he will review how gas prices are affecting the small-car, full-size pick-up truck and SUV markets.
Pipas will also address the rationale behind Ford's recent announcement regarding production cuts and how they are closely tied to Ford's Way Forward Acceleration Plan.
For nearly ten years, George Pipas has been the manager of U.S. sales analysis and reporting at Ford Motor Company. During that time he has worked closely with financial and business media, investors, and security analysts, communicating current and future U.S. automotive market trends.
Pipas joined Ford Motor Company in 1976 and has since worked in various areas of the organization including finance, communications, and sales and marketing. He began his career as a financial analyst in Ford's finance department. Pipas was appointed manager of U.S. sales analysis and reporting in 1997.

Nationally Renowned Legal Reform Champion, Steven B. Hantler, Featured at Next Motor Press Guild Meeting
Hantler to Discuss Tort Reform, DCXs Campaign against Frivolous Litigation
At the May 2 Motor Press Guild (MPG) luncheon, nationally renowned tort reform expert Steven B. Hantler, associate general counsel for DaimlerChrysler, will discuss legal reform as it relates to the automotive realm, including DaimlerChrysler’s unusual campaign to turn the tables on plaintiffs lawyers in the battle against frivolous litigation.
Automakers, in particular, are painfully aware of the lawsuit-happy mentality that translates to more consumer costs and less product innovation. Hantler recently grabbed headlines for helping to bring down three crooked San Antonio lawyers who filed a bogus $2 billion product-liability case against DaimlerChrysler based on false evidence. Hantler and DaimlerChrysler are firmly campaigning against trial lawyers bringing forth frivolous product-liability cases that prove to be costly to all.
“The unfair civil-justice system at the state level has made the legal system in the United States the world’s most expensive and imposes huge costs on consumers and businesses alike,” wrote Hantler in a recent column in The Wall Street Journal. The ‘cost’ of a litigious society is borne by every resident in every state.”
At Tuesday’s MPG meeting, Hantler will specifically address:
- The situation today is the legal crisis real?
- What are the specific implications for automakers and the media who cover them?
- Who are the players driving the issue ahead?
- How will achieving a fair and predictable civil justice system affect our industry and our lives?
Hantler is among the foremost leaders in the United States advocating legal reform and activating diverse coalitions of people to make legal reform a reality at the state level. Hantler is DaimlerChrysler Corporation's assistant general counsel, where, among other duties, he handles product liability and class action law suits. He also serves as Chairman of the American Justice Partnership, which champions legal reform in the states and is affiliated with the National Association of Manufacturers.

Ford’s top performance engineer will explain
how racing leads to better vehicles
at Motor Press Guild Monthly Meeting
Born in Vietnam, Hau Thai-Tang rose through the ranks at Ford Motor Co., leading the engineering efforts on the new Mustang. He recently took over Ford’s advanced product and high-performance divisions and will be discussing increased coordination between SVT and Ford Racing.
Like many SVT engineers, Thai-Tang uses skills developed during his Ford Racing engineering rotation to improve on production programs like the 2005 Mustang and other SVT products:
“I’d say the experience and skills that a Ford engineer gains as a member of a racing program can pay big dividends when it comes to working on a production-vehicle program. The high-pressure racing environment like I experienced with the Newman-Haas CART racing team teaches engineers to work in a disciplined manner and to supplement subjective driver’s impressions with objective test data. Do it successfully, and the result is a car that’s extremely satisfying to drive.”

Jeff Bell, V.P. of Chrysler/Jeep to speak on the current state of diesel technology in the U.S.
At the Motor Press Guild's June 7 meeting, Jeff Bell, Vice President, Chrysler/Jeep at Chrysler Group, will discuss the current state of diesel technology and about DaimlerChrysler’s market test of diesel passenger vehicles in the U.S.
Diesel-powered cars and light trucks make up less than 3% of the U.S. passenger vehicle market, compared with Europe where diesel passenger vehicle sales are approaching 50% of the market.
DaimlerChrysler is testing the U.S. consumer market with two new products, the Mercedes-Benz E320 cdi and the new Jeep Liberty CRD diesel. Even before production began, about 60,000 consumers expressed interest in the Liberty CRD; vehicles are remaining on dealer lots for less than 15 days.
How strong is consumer interest in diesels? What is the potential market for diesel cars and light trucks? And what will it take to convert curiosity about clean diesel into commited customers?
Jeff Bell will address these issues, describe the benefits of diesel, and the challenges of convincing consumers to try the new advanced technology diesels. He will also describe an innovative program to fuel each new Liberty CRD with 5% biodiesel, focusing attention on this promising clean, renewable fuel.

March MPG Meeting
Rob Allan, AMG product manager at Mercedes-Benz USA, will discuss high-performance brands at Tuesday's MPG luncheon
The need for speed doesn’t appear to be fading among car enthusiasts and performance divisions have become the rage among automakers. Some have been successful, others less so. What does the future hold? Will the price of gasoline have an effect?
AMG’s Rob Allan will try to answer those questions. AMG, the high-performance division of Mercedes-Benz, has been a leading performance brand for decades. Hill still holds the honor of being the first, and only American born driver to win
the Formula One World Championship. In Ferarri: A Champion’s View, Hill illustrates his ten year career as a Ferrari factory driver. Starting in 1952, Hill competed in 88 races, won 25 of them, and placed in the top-three an impressive 51 times. During that time, Hill also won both the 24 Hours of Le Mans and the 12 hours of Sebring three times. In the book, Hill places the reader in the cockpit, explaining the complex mechanics and the driving experiences behind the wheel of his many race cars.
John Lamm worked with Hill on the 190 color and 30 black and white photographs in the coffee-table sized book. For Lamm, a successful published author himself, this is his second Dean Batchelor Award, having last won it in 2001 for a feature in Road & Track magazine.
The Dean Batchelor Award was established in 1995 and annually recognizes outstanding achievements by automotive writers, photographers and broadcasters. It was named in honor of one of the icons of automotive journalism, Dean Batchelor, whose passion for automobiles led him to many positions at various magazines in the industry and also to author several definitive books. In addition, Batchelor was actively involved in motorsports, designing and building the “So-Cal Special” race car that was used as inspiration for the award.

A self-proclaimed "gear head," Genat has restored two classic cars and is working on a chopped 1932 five-window coupe. He has written 25 books and more than 100 magazine articles on automobiles, aviation and law enforcement. Genat currently lives in Encinitas, Calif., with his wife Robin and operates Zone Five Photo.

Les Unger on Toyota Motorsports
Few automakers have enjoyed successes in motorsports equaling that of Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A. Having finished more than 20 years of American professional auto racing, Toyota has established a rich racing history in a relatively short period of time.
Just last year, Toyota Motorsports won both CART Manufacturer’s and Driver’s Championships, adding to a successful past that has witnessed Toyota victories at the Daytona 24 Hours, the 12 Hours of Sebring, the Pikes Peak Hill Climb and the Baja 500 and Baja 1000, just to name a few.
And this year, Toyota Motorsports set out to add the greatest prize in American motorsports, a victory at the Indianapolis 500. With 10 wins in the season's first 13 races, Toyota officially clinched the IRL IndyCar Series Engine Manufacturer's Championship.
Overseeing these factory-backed efforts at Toyota Motorsports is Les Unger, a veteran of the motorsports program since 1985, where he currently holds the position of national motorsports manager. Having enjoyed 27 championships in IMSA sports cars, MTEG Off-Road Stadium Racing, and SCORE Desert racing competition, Unger also oversees the marketing activities of Toyota’s programs in NASCAR Goody’s Dash, Championship Off-Road Racing, NHRA Top Fuel and Sport Compact Drag Racing, and a much anticipated entry into the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series next year.
Join us for an insider’s view of Toyota Motorsports, and enjoy an up-close look at some of the vehicles playing a key role in the fast-paced image that has influenced American auto racing’s recent past; and where it is heading into the future.

Automotive Safety, Crashworthiness, and the Human Body
NHTSA reports that 41,730 people were killed and another 3,031,000 were injured on the nation’s public roads and highways in 2001. To respond to this “epidemic,” and the related economic costs ($350 billion in 2001), the Crash Injury Research & Engineering Network (CIREN) was created by NHTSA in 1996 to study a vehicle’s crashworthiness and how some have “better” collisions than others.
Dr. Stephan Moran, a self-described car nut, a trauma surgeon (he led the trauma team that saved the life of Jack Roush after his plane crash), and the associate director of CIREN, will speak (and show moderately graphic pictures) to our membership. Topics will include cars, collisions, crash testing, and what it all means for us down the road. Join us for this important presentation.

June 3, 2003 REMODELLING MOTORSPORTS How Chris Pook is Retooling CART’s Business Plan and Why
When Chris Pook was thrust into the leadership role of the CART series at the end of 2001, some big promises were made -- which included revitalizing the company, getting more people in the stands, and providing numerous marketing opportunities for high-dollar sponsors. Open wheel racing has had its up and downs over the years, but Chris Pook is determined to grow the series and provide race fans with better competition and entertainment, all the while keeping shareholders happy with steadily growing profits. Not a small juggling act. As many observers have noted, it hasn't all happened yet, but Mr. Pook will be on hand to offer a status report for the 2003 season, and possibly a few secrets about the upcoming 2004 and 2005 changes to CART racing. As always, our speaker will be available to answer any and all of our questions after his presentation. Join us for this in-depth look at CART racing. See you there!
